This is an extremely simple way to create a garden, you don’t require large amounts of room and you don’t need large areas of earth, perfect for those patios and slabbed gardens.
On a basic level you just need to pour some compost into a pot and plant your plant. Whilst simple, it does require some work, for example you need to make sure to plan out a container garden. Follow these basic tips to ensure your container garden looks great.

  1. Container sizes
Look at the sizes of the containers, combine large and small containers to build contrast. Make sure containers are big enough for the plants that you want to grow, allow enough room the plants roots to spread. Don’t go too big though as this can cause overly moist soil and kill the root.
  2. Drainage
Drainage is vital for containers otherwise the plants roots will sit in water and rot. Ensure there are holes in the bottom of your pots, most clay and terracotta pots will have holes but you may need to drill holes in plastic or wooden containers.
  3. Positioning
Look at the sizes of the containers, combine large and small containers to build contrast. Make sure containers are big enough for the plants that you want to grow, allow enough room the plants roots to spread. Don’t go too big though as this can cause overly moist soil.
  4. Watering
Containers can struggle with water, they are prone to drying out, especially in the hot weather. Some people set up elaborate micro drip irrigation systems, however containers can and will survive with regular watering from a watering can or hose. Water retaining crystal can be mixed into the compost to help retain some water and to slowly release it through out a hot day.
  5. Feeding
Containers do restrict the growth and spread of plant’s roots and so restrict the amount of food they can absorb. Regularly feeding a container in the growing months is very important. By adding a slow release food in the form of pellets you can provide nourishment without having to worry.
